Coming together

This group is brilliant. I went to a holiday talk/cocktail thing at Norwood the other day. Lauren Bush of FEED talked about her new plan to change the way children eat in American schools which is horrid and causes kids to get diabetes and be obese. Global nomads was there too and mentioned they are helping Pakistani kids skype with kids in middle America which I personally think will foster acceptance of different cultures and people seeing each other as other humans and not so different and will lead to less wars and violence. After the very inspiring little event, I practiced acceptance of different cultures by joining some very fun and brilliant Italians for dinner at Quinto Quarto ("Alora, now we go to the BEST Italian restaurant) and dancing at the place under Bagatelle and a nightcap at the Ear. An epically enjoyable evening which I spent the next day recovering from. Thank god for steam rooms, hot yoga and salsa. Yes, salsa is somehow a miraculous recovery food, try it, I swear. Like over a poached egg and toast for impromptu weekday brunch. Which I made for my friend Alexis and her Danish boyfriend while I stayed with her for a couple days (they basically had loud breakup sex the WHOLE time I was there) and which I might need again tomorrow because I have just been invited to a party for Anthony Haden Guest who is apparently "a famous art writer and drunk". He did a doc on eurotrash, sounds like a fun dude. I guess when I was moping about being sans boyfriend around the holidays I forgot that this is NYC :)

Gracious vigilantes

My friends Gerald and Sam collaborated on these amazing photos:

Gracious vigilantes is a series of portraits shot by Sam Bassett.Concept and art direction by Gerald DeCock done exclusively at the Hotel Chelsea between the hour of sunset to twilight.

An Empire Day

Yesterday I had the kind of day I love in NY. I started out at the Soho House and ended up at a divey pool hall in Williamsburg where a bleach-blonde short woman walked around with a microphone serenading the Latinos and the hipsters with slow latin balads. Then they played lots of salsa and reggeton which made it hard for me to keep my hips still which is my excuse for why I played the worst couple games of pool I have ever played.

Me: "How do you date 2 Egyptians at the same time?"
Her: "Well one was from New Jersey and one was from New York"

Tea

Now that I am no longer living with a Brit, in an imported-from-England-only Tetley household, I am happily rediscovering the BEST tea in the world. Mariage Fréres. Here is an article about it. My faves are Buddha Bleu (Green), Marco Polo (Black) & Rouge Bourbon (Red). Other amazing teas: Capim Limon from Brazil, which I drank everyday in Brazil in the jungly country outside Sao Paulo and it made everything better, it's like miracle tea. Also, my kindof grandmére Marielle turned me onto the Peach tea from Takashimaya. When brewed, her eyes get sparkly and wide and she says "look at that colour, it's extraordinary, non?" She loves colour. Her late husband, the American painter William Segal, founded the Color Association of America and made her president, because of her love of color. Isn't that soooo romantic?? Here is a link to Marielle's latest book "The Color of Love"

Humanity in watercolors

Check out the paintings of Austin Power my friend Giles posted a link to on his blog

3 things men have said to me that should have made me run. but didn't.

1. Yes, God says it's a sin for us to sleep together before marriage but I'll go to confession tomorrow.
2. I'll solve all your problems.
3. I'm Italian.

Keeping up with America's hottest brands

The snuggie is apparently one of them, selling now at Lord & Taylor's and pet stores.

New products include college-themed Snuggies, leopard and zebra prints and Snuggies for kids and dogs. New marketing wrinkles this year include a well-publicized Snuggie runway show during Fashion Week in New York and a collaboration with the band Weezer, which put the Snuggie into a music video and has its own custom version.

Weezer! The sweater song!

Foreshadowing?

"Frankly my dear..."

This scene where Rhett finally leaves Scarlett, is just like how my relationship ended. Maybe there are archetypes for breakups.

Wisdom from foreign men

My Brazilian friend emailed me this evening offering condolences on my breakup. He asked me if I have a wild horse inside me. Meanwhile, I had a glass of Pinot Noir and soup a l'onion at the French Bistro in Piermont and met a French baker that invited me to come make marzipan roses with him in his bakery. Then, from what I could make out with his thick Marseille accent, he told me that I should do what I've always dreamed of doing but never did. I hope my wild horse doesn't trample the roses.

the new addition to my west coast family

My brother and I drove upstate today to our mother's cottage and on the way we called our sister, Colorado, who lives in Berkeley. We had a speakerphone chat with Cheyenne, her 5 year old daughter, who informed us that she has a new kitten named Rosa. Then she explained that the kitten was 'what's the word, it's not transsexual, it's trans-transgender.' very matter of factly in that way that five-year-olds can explain things. Then she told us she married the older very fat black cat Cleopatra.
