Carson McCullers

“There are the lover and the beloved, but these two come from different countries. Often the beloved is only a stimulus for all the stored-up love which has lain quiet within the lover for a long time hitherto. And somehow every lover knows this. He feels in his soul that his love is a solitary thing. He comes to know a new, strange loneliness and it is this knowledge which makes him suffer. So there is only one thing for the lover to do. He must house his love within himself as best he can; he must create for himself a whole new inward world—a world intense and strange, complete in himself.”

when advertising is cool

I'm going to make a good parent someday

Berkeley, CA. a few months ago.
16 year old son of my friend: Hey will you do me a solid and get me a big ass bottle of grey goose for me and my homies? (he may have used a more modern term than homies)
me: um, I'm not sure I feel comfortable doing that... I don't know your friends and if your dad, who just showed me the new contraption he uses to smoke his 'medical' marijuana, will not even buy it for you, I'm not sure I should.
him: But, c'mon, I thought you were cool. Please?? Do me a solid??
me (pensive): It's never really a good idea to be desperate for alcohol. Or sex. Always remember that.

Sunshine

I'm in Miami for a few days at the Social Venture Capital/ Social Enterprise Conference. I've seen the light. And it's only day 1 of 3. And it's not the mojitos talking.
Today I attended umpteen panels with titles such as:

Creating a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation
Unique mobile solutions for the region
Culture & Social enterprise: what not to do?
Happiness doesn't have to cost the earth (this one was pretty cool. Happiest countries/ lowest planetary impact are Brazil, China, Germany (??) and US is actually pretty low on the list but because it has such a high impact)

The day kicked off with a panel of speakers addressing rebuilding Haiti and a teleconferenced in minister of finance of Kabul. One particularly interesting point made was the importance of creating jobs and how donor money is actually really not helpful and creates destructive dependence in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa.
But overall today, I came away feeling like it really is possible to create for-profit business that helps alleviate some suffering in the world. And maybe future generations will grow up thinking this and it will just be totally natural that they will want to be entrepreneurs and capitalists that help make people's lives better.

Oh Dusty!

I know, I know you're sick of any song from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. BUT Look at those cheekbones! And how her dress matches the set!

A Little Princess

This was my favourite show when I was little in Paris. I watched it after school every day eating pain au chocolat and often wept, along with my mother while we watched poor little Sarah Crewe getting horribly abused by the evil original mean girls. Anime that is so emotionally heart-wrenching. I think it's in the eyes. Look at how huge and sparkly and round they are.

Hello Carroll Gardens!

I love my new neighborhood. Last weekend, after 5 years in the west village, I relocated to Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn to a big lofty duplex apartment with 2 whole bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. My roommates are my brother and Daniel and at the moment Molly who is staying with us this month a few days a week. In exchange she will be buying us a sofabed that she will sleep in instead of my bed because she steals the blankets. She took a lovely couple photos which can be viewed here. She thinks the view is a wasteland but I find it charming or maybe the massive amount of sunlight is charming.

Wholesome week

Time to hit the refresh button.
This is my favourite tool:

http://www.ariseandshine.com/cleanse7.aspx

You can actually eat on this cleanse. Fruit smoothies, gazpacho, salads... Healthy stuff to stave off hunger and nourish while the Native American herbs in the cleansing pills draw out toxins from the organs. I find it also detoxes buried emotions and negative stuff that is usually medicated by caffeine, alcohol, vitamins, etc.
Good activities while detoxing:
Knitting (good zen practice to try to master a tunic sweater when I've only ever knit a scarf 5 years ago)
Reading- e2 a hilarious book about the ad biz. biography of Nancy Mitford, so very inspiring, what is it about English life in the 1880-1920's that is so enthralling. also started a book by JP Donleavy called Fairy Tale of NY (what kind of fairy tale starts with a guy finding a funeral home for his dead wife?)
Fighting with real estate agent about getting keys to new apartment in Brooklyn. Corcoran bad.
Setting up lunches and drinks for next week
Reading about careers as a foreign service officer. Ambassador sounds quite lovely.

The key to a successful union?

I love airports. Yesterday I witnessed what I think was a first-time coffee date between a techie and his mail order Asian bride. She giggled nervously at his corny jokes one of which involved jelly beans and hitler. Then I realised she didn't understand a word he was saying. Which makes me think that they might actually be quite happy together.

I found this touching...

I've never been a big John Lennon fan but this humanized him for me... more so than "Imagine" etc.
