I'm in Miami for a few days at the Social Venture Capital/ Social Enterprise Conference. I've seen the light. And it's only day 1 of 3. And it's not the mojitos talking.
Today I attended umpteen panels with titles such as:
Creating a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation
Unique mobile solutions for the region
Culture & Social enterprise: what not to do?
Happiness doesn't have to cost the earth (this one was pretty cool. Happiest countries/ lowest planetary impact are Brazil, China, Germany (??) and US is actually pretty low on the list but because it has such a high impact)
The day kicked off with a panel of speakers addressing rebuilding Haiti and a teleconferenced in minister of finance of Kabul. One particularly interesting point made was the importance of creating jobs and how donor money is actually really not helpful and creates destructive dependence in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa.
But overall today, I came away feeling like it really is possible to create for-profit business that helps alleviate some suffering in the world. And maybe future generations will grow up thinking this and it will just be totally natural that they will want to be entrepreneurs and capitalists that help make people's lives better.
